Unexpected meeting with a Big Dummy

I really got caught up in the hype, earlier this year surrounding the debut of the Surly-built Xtracycle, but I didn’t anticipate seeing one in Anchorage.  When I showed up for a party at the home of a member of a Saturday night biking group I’m trying to belong to, there it was in the garage!  The owner was standing around telling a couple other people about his bike wrecks [something about hopping over a shrub on his girlfriend’s bike, and hitting the pavement when the rusted out fork caved in].  He said he coated the inside of the Big Dummy to avoid such corrosion problems.  I told him about the trick with the little piece of innertube to cover the joint where the Xtracycle rack is inserted into the frame posts [as I’d read in the Surly Slog].  His example was an 18″ frame and it was a fine machine, solid but relatively lightweight.  Good handling and all the utility you could want.  I stopped short of asking for a test ride.  I still want to own a Big Dummy one day.  Maybe after the hype dies down a bit, maybe the price will drop and/or maybe some used ones will become available.

The chronicles of Igor Kenk get weirder, as Kenk comes up with multiple choice answers to why he stole and warehoused nearly 3,000 bikes in Toronto.  The bike repair shop owner is obviously not mentally sound.  A pretty frustrating situation for those who lost a bike there.

I can’t stop thinking about the Rob Anderson story in San Francisco.  This evil little man has apparently brought implementation of millions of dollars worth of new bike routes and other infrastructure to a screeching halt, by suing the city.  His point, that by effectively decreasing vehicle capacity we will cause an increase in traffic congestion and thus air pollution is difficult to disprove, I guess.  Even though I know he’s wrong, and his positions are based on faulty assumptions.  So now there will be a temporary shutdown while the powers that be try to arbitrate his claims.

It kind of reminds me of Reagan telling us [in a 1980 speech] that trees are the source of pollution.

Stories like this should make us question all of our beliefs.  In a way I don’t mind that backers of the bike initiatives should have to prove up the worthiness of their plans.  But Anderson’s unfortunate assessment is that everyone who rides a bike into the city is an enemy of the people, a radical, militant lunatic trying to get all cars off the roads.
