PFD feeding frenzy

Yesterday every man, woman and child in Alaska who has been here for a year and applied to the program received $3,265 [a $1,200 “energy assistance” payment plus the largest permanent fund dividend in the 28 year history of the PFD].  I’d been planning to give maybe 25% of mine to various charitable causes and save the rest, but circumstances dictated otherwise, most of it going toward legal expenses for probate of my parents’ estate and the rest to a struggling relative.

I’m kind of getting to the point where I’ve got most everything I really need except a decent retirement plan.  I see the value of opting out of the consumer culture, even if I’m not quite there yet.  Those desires will be helped along by observing what was happening last night.  People were storming around the city buying those big ticket items — home theaters, couches, new computers.  Probably a lot of cars sold last night, though not as many as in years past.  There were traffic jams on major arterials at 7:00 and 8:00 pm.

When George W. Bush tells everyone to go shopping… Alaskans seem to be quite receptive to that message.
