Charles and the bears

It sounds like the State of Alaska is moving to shut down or at least curtail the controversial activities of Charles Vandergaw — who has for some years now lived closely with wild grizzly bears at a remote homestead.

A pretty interesting debate — whether or not the government has an interest here seems to depend on a finding that Vandergaw is risking the well-being of somebody other than himself.  I read about Vandergaw’s exploits a year or two ago and found it fascinating and scary as hell!  He seems to have had better luck thus far than the other outdoors experimenter I recall who liked to be close to bears, Tim Treadwell

Vandergaw doesn’t seem like he has a death wish exactly — but the idea of being bear food doesn’t concern him that much.  It must be fearlessness and fascination combined that keep him out of trouble.  Or maybe he was a bear in a past life?

34 years ago Vandergaw was my 8th grade science teacher.  I don’t remember much about him except that he had a sense of humor and was sometimes intentionally provocative.
